Leading Ladies – Kelly (Lola Monkey Designs) & Giveaway!

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, interests, etc.):

I am a mommy to my 4 year old daughter, Lola. I have always loved crafts and enjoy finding a way to DIY pretty much everything in my life. I love to run, watch movies, spend time with Lola at the beach and Disneyland and, like many of you I’m sure, I am dangerously addicted to Pinterest!

Tell us about your business:

I started Lola Monkey Designs in August 2010 as a fun “experiment” on Etsy. My daughter was almost 2 and I needed an outlet for all of the creative energy I had. I wasn’t sure if others would be as excited about my bow holders and monograms as I was, but I figured I would put them out there and see what kind of response I would get. They got popular pretty quick and it’s been a blessing to have ever since. I am able to work part-time from home doing something I truly love!

How did your business get started?

I was organizing Lola’s bows one day and thought, “There has to be an easier way to corral all of these!” I had seen bow holders in a similar fashion before, but I wanted something personalized and different. After doing some research on wood and the logistics of the whole design, I got to work. Through lots of trial and error I eventually found a design that worked!

Do you have a favorite Etsy project that you have done so far?

My favorite piece is probably my To Kill A Mockingbird Letter (see photo above).

What is your favorite part about having your own business?

The flexibility. Being able to take care of Lola and my home and work at the same time, but on my schedule, is priceless.

What is the hardest part?

Feeling like I am not spreading myself too thin. It is easy to get stuck checking emails, responding to emails, checking on orders, etc. I have had to set a very specific schedule for work and play. I am constantly reminding myself that Lola will only be this age for so long. The demands from both sides can be overwhelming at times.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

Hopefully flourishing and keeping me busy. I love Etsy and think they are a great company to be a part of.
